I haven't painted my kitchen in years and years. I have planned to for over a year, and thought that the first thing I would do after finishing classes would be to get it done. Then, DJ's graduated the same week I was done. I thought, I could do this in a few hours and it will look nice for the party.
So, I went to buy paint. My mom has said to get outside my box, and do something in a color I love. (As DJ pointed out, this is a woman who had her bathroom painted daffodil yellow.) I bought Swiss cream as a base, and tinted primer for my antique ruby stripes. I added a can of matching spray paint. So, Ruth and I got started. Guess what I forgot? The taping. So, instead of painting just the walls, I now had to do the trim.
Did you know that the mist from spray paint drifts? Obviously, I did not. It drifted all over my kitchen floor. The entire floor, except where things were placed. In a bit of panic, I called my sister, Kathy. Just the other day, she wrote this beautiful tribute for me, explaining how I was the one with a degree. Yeah, right. Book smart doesn't make house decorating smart. :) That is her department.
So, we talked and laughed. I ended up making a discovery. There are these little white "magic" erasers that remove the majority of paint from the floor. (Not the big white drips, but I no longer have a pink floor.) By the way, I am not a housekeeper, by any means. You may recall the shoe incident from a few months ago. :)
I have had this vision of using celery ends to make flowers. (Did you know when you cut off the butt, it has a flower shape?) I am not finished with my project, even after 2 days of painting and cleaning, but here is a preview:
I am going to fill in some of the white stripes with the green, and maybe add some color to my flowers. I have plenty of time for that. :)
Here is a new contribution to the kitchen. Ruth wanted to be sure that all who come to visit are welcome. I hope that sentiment is found to be true. I want people to know that this is a place to feel comfortable. I often consider my home to be a place like "The Burrow", the Weasley's home in the Harry Potter series. Things might be broken or out of sorts; we may not have any money but we have love .
If that love can settle around those who enter,
then we are finding the gravity of it all.
