Here is my journey to find out what makes me unmistakable, what brings me joy... and to release the thoughts in my head.

Controversy

So, I know there is a controversy about Halloween. I love the dressing up, and the candy. I admit to being drawn into the occasional spooky activity. Growing up, we went to haunted houses. My sister even got a job at one when she scared the people that worked there. (Kathy, if this is not the real story, remember I was little and that is how my memory works.) My boys have been werewolves and vampires. It is true, all of it.

This year there was a "haunted house" to raise money and food goods for the local food pantry. It was a good cause, and yes, 5 out of 6 of us piled into the car to go. We dropped off our food at the door. (Yes, some of the food I purchased in effort to save up. Hey, it could be us needing that resource, or not. In either case, it was a good idea to share.) We waited in line for over a 1/2 hour. The boys, and their dad (still amazes me he is home to do this stuff) did all the typical poking and trying to scare each other. Finally, it was our turn, along with three add on folks. Ruth was in front as we wandered through the first room. She was not impressed-- as is not frightened. Then, we got to the Dracula room. When the guy sat up, and leaned over the coffin, she said "Hi." So, he tried a little more of his scary act, to which she said, "You know I just love vampires. Really, I do." It is very hard to be scary when you are laughing. We ended our tour, and went on with our evening.
The going on meant going to the store to finish purchasing costumes pieces for Ruth. She started off wanting to be a vampire bride, moved to being a headless woman, thought about doing the werewolf thing, considered Dorothy, and finally we left with the costume piece in hand. (MOM, be warned.) A snake. Yep, the final decision is that Ruth is going to be a snake wrangler. She is entrance with Steve Irwin reruns, and his daughter, Bindy, has her own show. She tapes shows about catching snakes, and knows all the terms. And, hey, it is more of what I am comfortable with, so it works.
Oh, Man, I gotta' run. It is time for work, and I am still in my PJ's.

To set the story straight--I did dress up and scare the real folks at a haunted house--but I wasn't working there. Just playing!

About Halloween. Like you, I've always had mixed feelings about celebrating the "dark holiday" with my children. But I decided to say the Earth is the Lord's and EVERY THING in it. Cindy, HE knows your heart. I was a bit more disciplined about haunted houses and things. But I'm a much bigger scaredy cat than you are--and I didn't want any real demons following me home!

That said, I'm glad you are four hours away because there is NO WAY I would answer the door if I saw a SNAKE WRANGLER coming!! LOL!!!!!

Enjoy the time with your kids. It is so short-lived and we know who the victory belongs to at the end of the day. Love, Kathy
